Sponsorship

Chris Russell is a world class athlete and professional sailor, campaigning for the Rio 2016 Olympics in the laser class.

Having narrowly missed out on the London 2012 games, Chris is more determined than ever to achieve his goals in Rio in a few years time. This can easily be seen in his return to form and jump back up the rankings at the start of the 2013 season. Chris's took a win at the European Cup event in Switzerland during his first regatta of the season - form he has carried across the whole season as he prepares for the first Olymic qualification event at the ISAF World Sailing Championships in 2014.

Chris races in the Olympic Laser Class – a one-design boat, meaning all of the boats are identical – which makes it hugely competitive. Qualification for the Olympics is likely to come down to a head-to-head race between himself and one other. Only one place at the Olympics is up for grabs. Chris's focus lies not on securing this spot, but performing at the Olympics.

What's even more impressive, is that Chris receives no support from the Irish Sailing team or Olympic association (financial or other). Chris has single-handedley built a fantastic support network - a team of the very best people from all over the world to help him achieve his goals. He competes with approximately 1/10th of the budget of some of the big teams, yet is competitive with the very best in the world.

It's testament to Chris's passion and drive that he has been able to build high-profile partnerships with the likes of Helly Hansen, Wired Brands, GU Energy and more recently Honda. Chris relies on the support of his sponsors, both locally and internationally to help keep his Olympic campaign alive.

This is why North Spar are proud to support Chris across his Olympic campaign.
